What it is

Lumbar radiculopathy describes symptoms caused by irritation or compression of a nerve root in the lower back. Sciatica is a common term for pain travelling into the buttock and leg. A disc herniation or spinal stenosis can be the underlying cause.

What it feels like

  • Pain travelling from the back or buttock into the leg.
  • Tingling or numbness in part of the leg or foot.
  • Weakness, sometimes affecting lifting the foot or walking.

How it is assessed

Your clinician checks the symptom pattern, strength, sensation, and reflexes. MRI may help when its findings will guide treatment. Leg pain can also come from the hip, circulation, or nerves outside the spine.

Treatment

Many people improve with time, suitable activity, physiotherapy, and medication. An injection may be considered. Surgery can be discussed when disabling symptoms persist or nerve function is worsening; the procedure depends on the cause.

Seek care urgently if

  • New or rapidly worsening leg weakness, including foot drop.
  • Difficulty passing urine, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the groin.
