Enhanced recovery protocols

Multimodal pain control, early mobilisation, and opioid-sparing pathways to shorten the stay and speed the return home.

What it is

Enhanced recovery brings together preparation, pain management, and rehabilitation around an operation. The plan is adapted to the procedure, your health, and the hospital pathway.

The goal is to support recovery and a safe return home. A shorter stay is appropriate only when you are medically ready and have the support you need.

What it involves

  • Preparing your home, transport, and support before admission.
  • Following your hospital’s exact fasting and medication instructions.
  • A pain plan that may combine different medicines and other measures.
  • Assisted walking and movement when the treating team says it is safe.
  • Planning wound care, bowel care, and follow-up before discharge.

Why it matters

Knowing what to expect can make the transition from hospital to home easier. Tell the team if pain, nausea, dizziness, or another symptom is preventing you from following the plan.

Discharge timing and activity progression are individual. Your written instructions take priority over general information online.

Questions for your appointment

  • What is the main goal of this treatment for me?
  • Which symptoms are likely to improve, and which may remain?
  • What are the alternatives and the risks of waiting?
  • What help will I need at home, and when can I return to my usual activities?
